Children's Week is about the right of all children to enjoy childhood. This year, the Advocate for Children and Young People has launched a number of new initiatives to enable children to have their voice heard. Children's Week Awards have also recognised the work of two NSW early childhood intervention services around advocacy for young children with developmental delay and disability.
To be truly inclusive in Early Childhood Services we must look at the child as a whole and identify all the possible keys to inclusion, be it disability, gender, culture and language. All children deserve to be included and inspired in order to thrive.
Parents of children with disabilities often say that one of the most helpful things is hearing the experiences of another parent who has already been there. This is the story of one family's transition to school and what made it succesful.
Thinking independently, but together at the same time to be truly inclusive is like asking a child to pat their head and rub their tummy…..but guess what….we can do it! Taking the time to simply chat cannot be underestimated.
